RTE announced today that it had agreed to acquire the Irish newspaper’s UK assets.
The Irish papers will remain the majority owner, but it will be the news organisation’s Irish partner that owns most of the Irish assets.
The RTE deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2019.
RTE has been in talks with the Irish media company for some time.
In May 2018, the Irish broadcaster approached a number of Irish companies about buying the papers from the owners.
However, RTE failed to secure any interest from the Irish partners and they decided to sell the newspapers in January 2019.RTE said in a statement: This was a challenging and difficult period for us in which we had to work in the dark.
We have had many talks with interested parties about the future of the newspaper, and it is clear that we have made significant progress in our negotiations.
In November 2017, the RTE said that it would be closing the Irish newspapers.
